Big Brother Is Coming to Jakarta: Basuki Announces Big Increase in CCTV Cameras

Jakarta. Jakarta will see an exponential increase in closed-circuit television cameras around the city from next year, with the majority owned and installed by a private company.

Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama announced that 500 cameras — provided by telecommunication tower and network provider Bali Towerindo — would be installed in January. The installation will kick-start a program that will eventually see 4,000 CCTV cameras added to the city landscape.

“Bali Towerindo wants to give us 4,000 CCTV [cameras], starting with 2,500 cameras next year,” the governor said. “We’ll install 500 in January. This is to get the CCTV program started.”

Basuki said on Sunday that he had been asking for an increase in CCTV systems in the capital for more than two years, but it was never approved under the watch of the former governor, Joko Widodo.

The cameras will installed by Bali Towerindo as part of its corporate social responsibility program, and city authorities will be given access to the footage. Basuki said he wanted the company to see the cameras as “its asset,” so they would take care of maintenance — something Basuki saw as too expensive for City Hall.

“The important thing is we can have the records of all systems and software,” he said. “In the future, we want people to be able to access it easily.”
